#misec Southfield meeting
January 14 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
This month, John “JT” Thomas encourages us to “Encrypt All The Things!”
In a world of increased surveillance, cyber attacks by malicious actors, and stalkerware, it’s as important as ever to encrypt your data. While popular end-to-end encrypted communications apps such as Signal exist, we often take for granted the ease of non end-to-end encrypted cloud providers for other data such as documents, contacts, and calendars.
In this talk, we’ll be exploring options to fully end-to-end encrypt ALL of your private and personal data, even the things often missed. We’ll take a look at JT’s personal technology stack as well as alternative options so you have a breadth of choices when it comes to your own threat model and technical ability.
About the speaker: JT works as a freelance software developer but his true passion and interest, however, lies in anti-surveillance and privacy activism. He’s trained hundreds of political organizers, activists, journalists, and abuse victims on digital privacy and security and consults will small businesses on information security topics. In 2020, he founded the Radical Privacy Project, a grassroots community organization dedicated to continuing his privacy education but also pushing for legislative change in how surveillance technologies are used. You can find him around the web as @zensomancer.
